Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
These are some of the beatitudes found in the book of Matthew. However I believe that if Matthew were alive today there would be some definitive revisions to a few of these. Particularly if he had joined Zammy and I at BlizzCon '08 this last weekend.
...and the GEEK shall inherit the land.
That's right! The Geek.
The stereotyped definition of the label 'Geek', has undergone quite the metamorphosis within the last decade. They were that small socially inept group that watched to much Star Trek, played Dungeons and Dragons on Friday nights instead of dating, and were picked last for kickball. In fact the only thing most saw them good for is help with math homework. They were the brunt of the jokes, and the hazing by the jocks, but deep inside they knew that their day would come.
And so it has...
Think of where you would be if it were not for the Geeks. Geeks are who save you from the devastating computer crashes, and train you on how to use all the gadgets you are tethered to, like smart phones, gps, computers, and mp3 players. For all you flip-phone fans out there... you have those Star Trek watching Geeks to thank for that... Don't believe me? Just imagine William Shatner saying, "Beam me up Scotty"... what in his hand?
So now this small group has grown, drastically, and even occasionally can be seen in broad daylight. And the demographic of this community has evolved as well. Just take the Blizzard Massive Multi-player Online Role Playing Game, World of Warcraft. The current player population of this game alone sits close to 12 million and growing, so if WoW was a country, it would be the 75th largest country in the world, AND the most diverse and accepting. Consisting of every race, religion, creed, age and gender, and never discriminating of any of these. While at Blizzcon, which was a 16,000 person representation of this community, we saw the entire spectrum of this diversity, I mean just the age range alone was from about 10 to 70, and these are actual players.
So now lets talk world domination.
Napoleon, Hitler, and Stalin, all stopped. The world saw a threatening dictator trying to take over the world and rose up against them. But this small group of Vitamin D deficient, pocket protector wearing, social outcasts would never be seen as a dominating force, right? Well let me throw some names at you that are controlled by the Geeks, and you tell me if world domination by these is not already in process...
Google (they have my vote)
Apple (hello? iPhone)
Microsoft (enough said)
Also did you know that the military uses XBox controllers to control unmanned aircraft? And this is just the first step. Which means not only will you rely on the Geeks to protect your pictures and files on your computer, but thanks to the many hours of playing First-Person Shooters, Real-Time strategies, and Flight Simulators, you will also rely on us to protect your freedoms, look out Jar Heads!
So the Geek shall inherit the land, and it won't be by force or domination... but by simple assimilation. Resistance is Futile!
